Dans un monde parallèle où règne l'alchimie, Edward et Alphonse Elric, fils d'un alchimiste de renom porté disparu, perdent également leur mère, victime de la maladie. Les deux jeunes prodiges vont tenter de la ramener à la vie grâce à leur savoir. Mais comme toute science, l'alchimie exige le respect de certaines règles que les deux frères vont transgresser.
